Welcome!
Imagine what might happen if you had time securely set aside to write, a supportive community of other writers, and a way to discover your skills, to develop your voice, and to write whatever in you demands to be written. Join us and see! In Write Now Workshops, we begin with a brief centering meditation, and then
• write together in response to a writing prompt
• read aloud what we have written (you are free to opt out)
• identify what is compelling about each other's in-class work
• learn the art of nonviolent manuscript critique
• have the option to share outside work-in-progress with the group
This method is simple, congenial, and remarkably profound, almost uncannily so. It’s based on Peter Elbow's account of the creative process as described in Writing without Teachers (1973) and a whole stack of other books by him. Elbow's ideas were quickly developed into a workshop method by poet Patricia Schneider, who then spent thirty years refining her method before writing Writing Alone and with Others (2003). Both of these books were published by Oxford University Press. For a more detailed account of this method, see the posting here titled "Four Noble Truths for Writers."
